  3. WHAT IS A COMPUTER VIRUS?
  4. A computer virus is a program designed to replicate and spread on its
  5. own, preferably without your knowing it exists.  Like a human body,
  6. computers are vulnerable to infection by viruses.  These viruses, like
  7. their organic counterparts, can produce a variety of symptoms in their
  8. hosts.

  10. Not all computer viruses cause damage; some are content to multiply
  11. without causing obvious changes.  More malicious strains can issue
  12. random sounds or salute you with off-color messages.  In extreme
  13. cases, files and even entire hard disks can be wiped out.

  15. Viruses can spread in several ways.  Some duplicate themselves when an
  16. infected file is opened.  Others infect the boot sector on your
  17. computer's disk drive and then infect other disks as they are
  18. accessed.

  20. Your computer can catch a virus anywhere it gets data.  The most
  21. common source is from floppy disks, including shared software and
  22. shrink-wrapped software.
